mother were seeking Information about these

Men as the Magority of the Men came from

Battersea near the Headquarters of the Regt

there were some terrible scenes there by

all accounts the London Placards had a

Full Page of How the 23rd Beat the

Prussian Guards at Givenchy but What

a Price. so we had about a Week here

and went up the Line again and relieved

the French just about 2 Miles Left of

Loos about 3 mile from the Front Line

here the civilians were all Living still

in the houses and it was a Lovely Garden City

very similar to Welwyn Garden City and

Hampstead Garden City as we marched up the

Line the People were sitting outside there

Houses as if in London and the Light of

the Star Shells and shrapnell Lit up

the streets at Night but they were so

used to It they took no notice we

were billeted in Houses about a mile

from the Line which had been Evacuated

by civillians as they were constantly under

shell Fire but we didnt mind as we were

Laying in Proper Beds here about 12 in Each

House with all the Furniture Tables Pianos

and Even Back Gardens with Gooseberry

Bushes Plum. Apple Trees so we had a

Glorious time have when out of the Line we

spent a Week  in these Houses and about

4 Weeks up the Line which was a little Too

long as you could not have a wash only

in a Mess Tins and Not take your Boots off

and Full of Mud so after 4 Weeks of this
