mother were seeking Information about these
Men as the Magority of the Men came from
Battersea near the Headquarters of the Regt
there were some terrible scenes there by
all accounts the London Placards had a
Full Page of How the 23rd Beat the
Prussian Guards at Givenchy but What
a Price. so we had about a Week here
and went up the Line again and relieved
the French just about 2 Miles Left of
Loos about 3 mile from the Front Line
here the civilians were all Living still
in the houses and it was a Lovely Garden City
very similar to Welwyn Garden City and
Hampstead Garden City as we marched up the
Line the People were sitting outside there
Houses as if in London and the Light of
the Star Shells and shrapnell Lit up
the streets at Night but they were so
used to It they took no notice we
were billeted in Houses about a mile
from the Line which had been Evacuated
by civillians as they were constantly under
shell Fire but we didnt mind as we were
Laying in Proper Beds here about 12 in Each
House with all the Furniture Tables Pianos
and Even Back Gardens with Gooseberry
Bushes Plum. Apple Trees so we had a
Glorious time have when out of the Line we
spent a Week in these Houses and about
4 Weeks up the Line which was a little Too
long as you could not have a wash only
in a Mess Tins and Not take your Boots off
and Full of Mud so after 4 Weeks of this
