in the Front Line never allowed to take
any clothes off you were Pretty well Dirty
and full of Vermin and the Trenches were
all dug through chalk which made it warm
for Vermin so we got Properly Lousy Here
Also Plenty of Rats but they were lovely
safe trenches you could Sleep Pretty
Safe here in the Dug out when you were
off Duty and Play Cards without a Shell
Bursting in the centre of them and Mixing
them up just to the Right of us here there
was another big Battle raging with the
French and German this time it was the
Battle of Lucky Lugar refinery and Each
day we could watch the Battle Through
our Perriscopes and watch the French
go over the top after terrific Bombardment
it was a Grand sight to watch the
Houses tumbling Down with Shrapnel
and High Explosive shells the casualty
here were Enormous Both Sides there were
100,000 casualty both sides in the battle
which Lasted about a fortnight or so
while I was up the Line here I had the
good News Through that I and 3 others
were going on Leave for 7 Days to Blighty
so we Left the Line on Saturday Morning
and Arrived at Victoria on August
Sunday Morning exactly 14 Hours from
Leaving the Front Line but Traveling
about 6 Hours I was Smothered from head
to Feet in Mud when I got Home coming
Straight from the Front Line but I
didnt mind that I was out for a good time
