but not Transport so we Lost about

900 men in this Bottle which was about

350 killed the rest Wounded and Missing

as There were a few Prisoners taken and

a good many Blown to Pieces which were

Missing believed killed so after the

Roll Call The Sergeant Mayor came

Along and Detailed men off who would 

be Sergeants corporal and Lance corporals

but I was Passed I Said Mayor how about

me wouldn't I make a Sergeant he said

I was all right as I was as I was the Fool

of the Regt in Keeping the men alive and

cheerful in very dangerous corners after

Roll Call we were to have the biggest feed

of our Lives as far as War Time was concerned

as before we went up the Line about a

Week before we were a 1000 odd Strong

but we were now about 50 so all the

Mens Parcel which were sent to us During

that week had accumulated to us  During

that week had accumulated whilst we

were up the Line and when we got back

there was all these Parcels and it was

Impossible to send them back to England

as all the Men whom they belonged were

killed wounded and missing so we had

to open about 500 Parcels To see if there

were any Valueables sent out and to Return

and all Perishable things to Eat such a

Cakes and  ...  tins of Salmon Sardines

chocolates cigarettes and Soap Towels we were

allowed to have between us so we didnt

half have a feed on them but it was
