Body for about 500 yards which was a
terrible Experience as the Germans had
spotted us and were dropping Shells
all round us all the way through this
Stagnant ditch knee deep in mud and
and Body God help the Poor fellows
who got Shot and fell in this ditch as
dozens did and got drowned in this
mud when we got to our front line
we all Lined up by the scaling
Ladders as the Trenches here were
Sandbag Barricades as the Ground
was to swampy to dry Trenches and
I shall never forget the sight of
those Ladders which we had to scale
and go over I should think it is the
same feeling a Murderer gets when
he first sees the scaffold and
Rope which is going to hang him I
Lost the Sergeant who was Leading and
found I was the first man in our
Front Line as it was Empty had to
be abandoned owing to the terrible
Shell fire and casualty so they
were now coming in behind me now
and taking up Positions in front of
the Ladders ready to go over when we
were all through the ditch but a good
many got knocked over before we got
there unfortuneatly The Captain came
along of our company as we had our
Luetinent killed he asks me where the
Sergeant was I said I dont no he
came over with me but I lost hiim
