Body for about 500 yards which was a

terrible Experience as the Germans had

spotted us and were dropping Shells

all round us all the way through this

Stagnant ditch knee deep in mud and

and Body God help the Poor fellows

who got Shot and fell in this ditch as

dozens did and got drowned in this

mud when we got to our front line

we all Lined up by the scaling

Ladders as the Trenches here were

Sandbag Barricades as the Ground

was to swampy to dry Trenches and

I shall never forget the sight of

those Ladders which we had to scale

and go over I should think it is the

same feeling a Murderer gets when

he first sees the scaffold and

Rope which is going to hang him I

Lost the Sergeant who was Leading and

found I was the first man in our

Front Line as it was Empty had to

be abandoned owing to the terrible

Shell fire and casualty so they

were now coming in behind me now

and taking up Positions in front of

the Ladders ready to go over when we

were all through the ditch but a good

many got knocked  over  before we got

there unfortuneatly The Captain came

along of our company as  we had our

Luetinent killed he asks me where the

Sergeant was I said I dont no he

came over with me but I lost hiim
