and our tot of Bum served out and
stayed here in the second Line trench
until about 6 o clock and I might say
I sat there and thought all sorts of
things wondering how my wife would
get on if I was killed and wether I
would wake up in Blighty and how
I would killi a German with my Bayonet
in a hand to hand fight and a 101
Different things entered my head and
that Hour .1/2 seemed like days
waiting for the word go the Sergeant
with the wind up so bad he could not
speak I was saying cheer up Sarg
you have only got to die once I myself
Personally did not value my life at
Tupence as I had been such a lot of
Death by now and suffered terrible
Hardships that you seemed to Envy
any man you see dead as you said
to yourself Lucky chap hes out of
it I got mine to come and Perhaps
a more Terrible Death we were now
having a Terrible lot of killed and
wounded we had had over a 100 up to
now and we had not been over the
top yet anyway we had the order sent
along to get over the top here which
was between our Front Line and the
Second line reserve trench so the
Sergeant for over followed by myself
and Each Platoon in single file end
we waded through a Ditch Knee
Deep in mud and Slime and Dead
