the Sunday morning it was our turn to go

over and take a little Wood were a few

German guns were doing a lot of damage

so we took the Wood with a very few

casualty and captured the guns 3 of them

but another Regt on our Right Claimed

one of them but most of our casualtys

here was not with going over the top so 

much as with the Shells dropping in

the Trenches as the Germans had the distance

beautifully it was here were there was a 

Trench dug through a cemetery and either

side of the trench was bones and bits of

coffins all over it it made you feel as if 

you had been dead a few years and woke

up to have a look round there were

hundreds of prisoners captured here and we

were still advancing bit by bit and

Holding what had been taken the following

day we were expecting to go over again

as there was still more ground to be

taken to straighten the line out but

while we were sweating on going over we

had a surprise as the Brigade of Guards

Marched through the Trench in single file

and when they were all in they faced the

German line and an Officer with them the

Colonel I should imagine came through

he had an overcoat and revolver and walking

stick and yellow gloves he simply jumped up

on the parapet of the trench and calmly

looked round with shell shrapnel and

bullets whizzing all round him he took

no notice of this only surveying the
