Germans had a patrol out and started there

nonsense as they used to send a listening

party out at night well we had to lay there

for about 4 hours in amonst dead French and

German soldiers and 100s of rats running over

you and you dare not moved in case you were

seen by the enemy as we were laying just

about 3 yes from his trench we could here

them talking to each other it was a very

uncanny experience for 4 or 5 hours until

daybreak when we had to come in and we

clicked another day off which we well earnt

We were up this part of the line for a few more

days and then went back for a rest to a place

called Allowan where you could have a very

good time one way and another we were back here

for a week having a few lessons in going

over the top as we were preparing to go over at

Loos. After we had been here for a week we went

back to Bully Grenay in Trenches known as

Fosse 8 on Slag Heap the trenches were dug

through the slag which had come from the

coal mines we were just in front of the Loos

mine Tower but the Battle started on a Saturday

but we did not go over the top the first

day the 15th Division of Scottish Troops

went over and opened the battle and they

were knocked down like skittles and left

hanging on the barbed wire which was an awful

sight anyway they took Loos on our Left

and the 16th Irish Division followed them

up and we were in reserve for all this

able to see what was going on but had to

dodge a lot of Heavy Shell fire so on
