so about 8 o'clock P.M. 2 of our men went
out in front of the Line and cut the Wire
so we knew we were soon going over the top
very shortly but it was Postponed that
night so we had to hold the line all
night and next Day and all the time we
were being Bombarded with Shell and
Bombs and the casualty List was
growing very rapidly Every minute we
had Stretcher coming by us with killed
and wounded and all you could here was
So.Sos killed an other wounded all
your Different Pals so about 4 Oclock
in the Afternoon we were served out
with 2 Sand bags Each to use when
we got over the top to fill with Dirt
for cover and 2 Bandolier Extra of
amunition and everybody had got the
wind up round you I said to several
of them who were nervous as it was
the first time we had been called
upon to go over the top and Naturally
it was very Exiting wondering whether
you were going to get a Blighty or a
Blanket as when you were killed you
were wrapped in a Blanket wherever it
was Possible I said to them whats' the
matter I am going to treat it as I would
a gamble 20 to 1 I dont get killed
10 to 1 I get a Blighty which was a
risk worth chancing I confess I was a
bit windy to some as the next but
I did not show it like some of them
did so we had our waterbottles filled
