and Wandered round the back of Selfridges
or Baker St you would meet Jerry as we
used to call the Enemy we could walk
about in no mans land here it early
morning when it was misty just before
Sunrise and we would walk out finding
Souvenirs such as Shell caps and
search the Dead Soldiers for any
Souvenirs as there were a good many
German Laying out here and I got
a fine Razor out of a German Valise
on the Back of a German and a Rifle
Belt and Different thing which were
very usefull to us but you had to get
back in the Line when Daylight came
or you would get a Blighty or a Blanket
anyway taking Everything into consideration
we had a very nice 7 Days here and
then went back from whence we came
for a few more Days Rest
The Battle of Gvienchy
We got releived from here by the Gloucester
Regt and went back this time to a Place
called Cueuvy about 3 kilometres outside
Bethune a nice little Town to go back
For 2 or 3 Days as it was the First time
we had seen a bit of Life since we went
in the Line but my word they must
have seen us coming the Germans I mean
From their Observation Balloons for as
soon as we arrived they started to
Shell the Town thick and Heavy
will a 5 Point 9 shell which we
called Jack Johnsons as they used to
