dead man we had seen so it put
the wind up us a little bit however
we started our March up to the
Trenches to recieve our Baptism of Fire
I might mention although the Front
line did not look for looking
from the Window across country we
found it was a darn long way when we
had to walk as we zig zag all
the way through miles of trenches
and shaking in every limb after seeing
this man come down killed we thought
we were all coming back the Same
and wondering what the Trenches
were like occassionaly a Star Shell
would go up and light up all round
and down we would have to lay till
it went out as these trenches were
only about Knee Deep so you would
have to crawl through them by Day
and walk at night until a Star
Shell went up then you would here
a Machine gun Play on us then we called
then then you would keep Passing Messages
down such as Keep quite Still Hold
your Breadth Fritz can hear you and
some of those Messages got very Funny
by the time they reached the Last Man as
we all marched in single file there
were very often a man wounded or killed
in these stunts going up the line
as we had to step over several
casually who had got hit by the
