  to shell the roads all Day it was the

  second day we were here I had my First

  shock as i was going down the road to

  a Pump in an old Farmhouse to get some

  water to make tea and close to the Pump

  there was a sess Pool and Fritz sent

  over a Salvo of  4 shells 3 went on the

  Road and Burst just where I had Post

  and one went in the Pool where I was

  getting the water but it Failed to

  Explode or otherwise I should have

  seen no more war the chaps near I

  had gone down there for water and when

  they see me come out with the Biscuit

  in full of water unconcerned they 

  thought  it was my ghost as they made

  shore I was blown up anyway we all

  slept here for 2 nights our company

  and then 2 Platoons were ordered up

  the line 13-14 Platoons I was 15 so

  had another 2 Day spend have it

  was quite as bad as being in the Trenches

  as you could not sleep at night as where

  we laid our Heads the Bullets were

  Banging against the Wall and the Star

  Shells light the Barn like daylight

  and made it look very Weird we had

  a look round here in the Daytime

  and Clamberd up into the lofts and

  there were about 50 Bags of wheat

  and Potato and all the Farm Produce

  which had been left behind as there

  were no civilians near there and we
