Arrival in France

It must have been about the middle of March 1915 when we landed at Le Havre on a very cold morning before landing I looked across the water to England and said goodbye God bless you for God was   how long and we got paraded on the  key for the march to the Rest Camp and just before we started I began to realise we were in France the Sergeant Major had occasion to speak to one fellow near me for being out of line and he went of like a fog horn he said 'Grrrr you're not in England now you know 2 words from you and I'll put you where the crows can't  - on your well we marched to the Rest Camp where we arrived at about 3 o'clock in the afternoon and I might say we were fed up and far from home already having very little money and no grub only an Iron Ration conssiting of a  ... of bully beef 6 biscuits and a packet of tea and sugar which we were not allowed to touch as the biscuits were all broken up but when we had  ...  ... of them to see we had not eaten any. The Officer would join them together to make sure we had not eaten any we were then put in tents and had our first taste of bully beef stew and tea with no milk and biscuits and I might say it wasn't a lot of  ...  ...  after the food we had been used to in St. Albans anyway we were not in there long when a kind
