Mobilized

It was on the fourth Day of August 1914 when I was

mobilized for the Great War which had been

slowly coming for years before it actually

happened as I was only a territorial or

Saturday Night Soldier as they used to call us.

I was fortunate enough not to go straight

out to France but we all had to Parade

at our Headquarters 27 St  John's Hill

Clapham Junction S.W 23 Batt London Regt.

I arrived about 6 o'clock in the morning

and met crowds of people there. Wives,

sweethearts and mothers who imagined we

were going straight out to France without

even a bit of Breakfast anyway we lined up

as for Battalion Parade and were issued out

with our Necessary Kit such as Ammunition

Iron Ration Pay Book also an Housewife

the officer came and ask me if I had an

Housewife I said yes but I musnt take

Her must I. Well he said I dont no  know  what

they mean anyway we found it meant a

Small case with Needles Pins Cotton in case

we became unput anytime. After that we

all had to pass the Doctor which was a

Proper farce all we had to do was to file

Passed  past  him and he said Fit whether you

were Blind or just able to walk. Cause we

had the usual dodgers which you must

expect on an occasion like this what

we term swinging the Lead or windups

but they had an Inspection Later and they

found whether they were Fit or not anyway

after all this Fuss we had Dinner of Stew.
