which I soon found we were to nearly live on

for the next 4 years after this we were marched

to some Schools in Plough Rd Battersea where we

had to make our Beds up in the Class Rooms it

was fortunate the children were having there

Summer Holliday otherwise I expect we would

have slept on Clapham common. This is where

we had our first Army Pay Day as we were all

Paid out 5 Golden Sovereigns here as Mobilization

Money and cause they thought we would run wild

having become Possessed of so much Sudden Wealth

and Four Ale only Penny Half Pint so they tried

to kid us to put it straight in the P.O Savings

Bank but that wanted a Bit of doing well I think

I was very sensible with mine I went home on 4

Hours Leave and had a good time and gave what

I had Left to the Wife who no doubt found it

very useful as I had only been saving 18/- Per

Week for the last 2 years well after 3 or 4 Days

at these schools we had orders to proceed

to St Albans  which was to be our War

Station so the following morning we

all got in full Marching order for our

Long Route March to St Albans and it was

no joke for us chaps just come from ordinary

Work never done a days march since the last

time we went to camp 12 months Previous and

never wore heavy boots most of us had

come from factories offices etc and carmen Etc

well no doubt they anticipated a large

number of us falling out on the road anyway

we started off from Clapham Junction and

had our first march past it was going by

the Battersea Town Hall were we had to
