My Own Darling Wife,
We moved into the line on Tuesday
and found Brother Boshe fairly calm. The
mud can only be described in terms which
would not pass any censor. However the
frost has come again and the mud is
much less in evidence. My men are
behaving splendidly and even those in
uncomfortable places are bright + cheerful.
They play the game of war as well as
they used to play other games and the
risks they counted upon are treated
as part of the play. Some of course
are better at the game than others
but every man seems to be doing
well. These trenches are not so good
as some I know of and in parts
it is impossible to move about by
daylight so work &c. et cetera has all to be
done whilst you sleep. The moon
keeps smiling on us when we should
