This you stick on the God so it is very easy

for any one to say that they have gilded

a Buddist God in Burma. After leaving

here we next went to see what is called

the Turtle Ponds, this is an expance of

water about 200 yards square, in which

is a great quantity of turtles some of

them being an emmence size. As one

approches this pond he is very soon

surrounded by natives of all ages &

from which there is no escape until he

has paid 2 annas (2’) for a small plate

of some native fruit with which you

are supposed to feed the turtles. Care

must be taken here & not to do as one

of our men did, he wanted to appear

large & after throwing in this fruit

(which very much resembles a walnut

in appearance only it is soft instead of

hard) he threw in the Plate as well, but

he was very soon surrounded by these

Natives & if it had not been for the

men with him he would have been
