did a bit of shopping bought 30 cigars for 3’
had a supper off Quaker Oats at the soldiers
home. During one of the showers in the
morning were marched out for firing practice
had to Lie in wet grass on Stomachs for
half hour, then they wonder how illness
is caused. Posted letter home Longing
for news.
Sun Dec 20 1914
church Parade during morning rather
enjoyed it. Came back & layed about until
dinner. After Dinner went about 2 miles
into the Jungle. Very pleasant but rather
exciting. Magnificent trees & had to walk
with the grass up to our necks. Saw a
quantity of monkeys & a large snake
but we took care it did not catch us.
there are a great quantity of Birds of
all colours & 1 kind of Great size which
is called a Kite Hawk. This Bird we are
not allowed to shoot as they are considered
