the Following morning as Daylight came

we began to see more of the Slaughter

which was caused when we came over the

top as I looked accross to our old

Front Line the Ground was covered

completely with Dead and Badly Wounded

and the Dead Lay in the Trench were

we were so close all the way along

that there was not Even room to Put your

Feet as you walked along without Treading

on a Body and as the sun came out it

was terribly Hot it was just like some

Slaughter House as some of the the Dead

were terribly smashed up as we were

shelled with a very high Explosion

and a very strange thing came to my

mind I had got no water and I had

not felt Thirsty the whole time I had

been here and it would have been all

the same if I had I could not get any

as I was still busy looking after the

wounded with water from the Dead Mans

Water Bottles it struck me at the

time that the Almighty was Protecting

me to look after the wounded as I was

able to do this all the Morning and

never once did I want a Drink I had

in my rations Bag a few  Horlicks  Milk

Tablets and I never had any wish to eat

those I Eventually gave them away I

managed to walk along the trench a

Bit to get out of the ghastly sights

I was with as I was now the only man

not Wounded as far as I could see left
