Dear Miss Hoy,

                Thank you kindly for the photocopy

of a most extraordinary document. Such a thing

I have not come across before. You quite often hear

of people dealing with trauma in such a way

but it is unusual to actually see any evidence of

this kind. Your father writes clearly and well

about his experiences during the Great War. Even

now, as I write this letter, several hours later

I am able to recall certain recollections of your Father’s

experience – “Death is always lurking at one’s elbow”.

The 2nd LT “to my mind…was the man who

won the War”, playing poker with the Colonel

and then to O.P, etc, etc – This fact alone,

proves that this document is invaluable to the

archive. Your Father’s cold sobriety as he looks
