A long spell in the hospital perhaps even a trip

- dear old Blighty was something to be thankful

for. It doesn’t sound very heroic does it. According

to all ideas & theories one should have been sorry

to get away from beating the Germans. But after

four years of war it meant a lot to us to be

able to sleep in a decent bed, have decent meals

and once more become civilised even if the price of these

comforts was a wound. So perhaps you will

realize why I wsa “wind up” getting back over

that infernal bombing stop. If I stopped another

Hun bullet it might mean goodbye to England

home, Beauty and all I wanted just then was to

get away from any more danger, and I knew if

I could only successfully drop in the trench the other

side I stood a mighty good chance of getting back.

so with a mighty effort I hoisted myself up

with the help of two of the infantrymen & half

rolled, half crawled across that yard or two

of exposed surface. Luck was with me and

somewhat on the wire but that mattered not at

all. For the time being I was under cover and

except for running into an unlucky shell

had every chance of making the Field Dressing

Station & then away for somewhere behind

the lines. My Welsh friend gave me two men

to accompany me back because by the time I

was feeling pretty bad. I discovered afterwards
