A long spell in the hospital perhaps even a trip
- dear old Blighty was something to be thankful
for. It doesn’t sound very heroic does it. According
to all ideas & theories one should have been sorry
to get away from beating the Germans. But after
four years of war it meant a lot to us to be
able to sleep in a decent bed, have decent meals
and once more become civilised even if the price of these
comforts was a wound. So perhaps you will
realize why I wsa “wind up” getting back over
that infernal bombing stop. If I stopped another
Hun bullet it might mean goodbye to England
home, Beauty and all I wanted just then was to
get away from any more danger, and I knew if
I could only successfully drop in the trench the other
side I stood a mighty good chance of getting back.
so with a mighty effort I hoisted myself up
with the help of two of the infantrymen & half
rolled, half crawled across that yard or two
of exposed surface. Luck was with me and
somewhat on the wire but that mattered not at
all. For the time being I was under cover and
except for running into an unlucky shell
had every chance of making the Field Dressing
Station & then away for somewhere behind
the lines. My Welsh friend gave me two men
to accompany me back because by the time I
was feeling pretty bad. I discovered afterwards
