the bullet had gone clean through my arm near
the shoulder joint, had splayed out against the
thick bone and gone on through the shoulder
blade leaving a hole in my back as big as a
tea saucer and I was bleeding badly.
Accompanied by the two privates I started to
walk down, fortified somewhat by a stiff dose
of neat whiskey which I still retained in my pocket.
as I passed my solitary signaller I gave him
a message for Brigade telling them I was wounded
and asking them to send a relief.
After walking back for half a mile I began
to feel to exhausted to go any farther so I sent
back my two men to their little company of
mortar-men & awaited a stretcher. I was feeling
quite happy: I had a little more whiskey &
a smoke, and soon saw an empty stretcher
with a couple of bearers going to the front line.
they didn’t want to take me as I looked quite
alright except for one arm & I fancy
they thought I was rather lazy to want carrying
back, when they could have been busy with more
serious cases. However they did take me and I
was extremely obliged to them in spite of the most
excruciating pain at every jolt of the stretcher
and believe me it did jolt.
Well girlies my tale of this day is nearly
done and little more remains to be said.
