the last time we actually saw
any member of the fair sex was on
March 4th. The town was very
interesting. The houses actually
had roofs on & the people - crowds of
them - were walking about the streets
with nothing to disturb them. We found
we could only use the cafés
between 12 & 2 pm, & 6 pm & 8. It was
also a meatless day. However we
had an excellent lunch with
roast chicken as the chief dish (not
reckoned as meat). The table cloth
was clean & white, the glasses shone
& there were clean plates, knives &c.
for each course. It cost me 20 f
but for one day in three months
I thought it was well worth while.
The shops were very interesting but
many of the things were dear while
some were very cheap. I wanted to
buy lots of things to send home but
time was short & it is difficult to
