My Own Darling Wife,
Think I shall be able to get a letter off
to-night so here's to write it at present I am
sitting on the barrel rest in my cellar and
feeling grateful for the shelter & the comfortable
warmth of the stove that we have installed.
This village is in some respects worse than
ever, but it is a jolly sight better than being
out under a hedge or even lying in the open
with no shelter at all. The Boche has peppered the
place pretty well since we came in so we
have covered the cellar with a large quantity of bricks
mortar, soil, beams, iron &etc. - partly by pushing
over the walls of the house & partly by carrying
stuff from what was next door. The place is
now safe except from a direct hit from a
really large shell & we should be very
poorly used if such an unlikely event
were to occur. We pushed up here a day
or two ago and have not had too bad
a time. It was awfully warm for we were in
full bit - however it was cold enough
later on. Sorry I had to leave this
yesterday & now I must finish off
in a hurry as letters are going
back in a few minutes. Hope you
are all fit & well. I am as fit as
ever & going strong. Don't know when
we are to have a rest but I shall
have not had my clothes off since
the 23rd. I am afraid this is a scribble
but I'll try & write later as I expect to be
up rather late
