of bed you can feel the bars across
one's back & you feel as if you had been
hit with hot irons. Just had the pleasure
of seeing a native prisoner being marched
to be hung. This is rather an interesting
spectacle as there is nothing seen like this
in England. In front of the Prisoner
marches a warden with a Rifle & Fixed
Bayonett, one at each side & one at the
back, the Prisoner is in the centre in chains
& in a Brilliant Red jacket. Behind this
party comes a Bullock wagon on which is
a large galvanized Box very much after
the shape of a coffin. In this they bring
back the Remains after the Execution &
then they are buried in the Prison yard.
The part of Mandalay where we are quartered
is in the Direct route of this procession & it
is really surprising the number of prisoners
that are taken out to execution I should
say that the average is about 2 per
week.
