We are now having about the luckiest time

I have ever spent in my life. We are all

confined to Barracks on account of cholera in

the Town & as the length & breadth of the Barracks

are about 200 yds by 100 yds & it gets dark

at six o'clock & we have only a very small

oil lamp to see by it is easily seen what a

great & glorious time we are having. We are

not allowed to drink water eat fruit drink

minerals or to buy any thing to eat so people

can just about guess what a glorious land is

Burma. (I don't think). Have just heard (Sept 22nd)

that there are a party of men & officers sent from

Maymyo to Goteik to guard what is called the

Goteik Bridge this is a very large Railway

bridge which is about 20 miles from Maymyo.

This Bridge is a most marvellous construction &

span & great Ravine & is composed of a great

quantity of iron Rods interlaced in a most

marvelous fashion & is considered a most

marvellous pieces of engineering.
