This is about 4 miles out of Mandalay
at last we reached the town & what a
sight is was to see a tram car for the
first time since leaving England of course
we were marched straight up to the Barracks
on the way to which we passed what is called
the Fort this is a massive brick wall about 15 ft
high it is exactly 1 mile square all this is
surrounded by a very large & deep moat this is
about 45 yards wide & at intervals is spanned by
a great drawbridge. We are supposed to supply the
guard for this Fort so I shall be more able
to describe it after I have been on Guard
there. When we at last reached the Barracks
we found a great change from Maymyo. The
barracks instead of as at Maymyo being about
3 ft off the Ground were raised 20 ft off
the ground & the height altogether will be
about 60 ft high. Another difference there is that
all Bungalows at Mandalay are tether up
with paukas these are always kept in motion
by a native pulling at a rope from 11 AM
until 12 midnight.
