The village of Maymyo itself is only a

very small place just one street running

through the centre with shops on each side

the shops are very small & low just like a

lot of cowsheds in a farm yard. In front

of each shop is a deep gully uncovered about

3 feet wide which carries away the refuse

of the Village no covered sewers as in

England & to get in the shops you have

to walk over these on a narrow plant.

In the dark you are very lucky if you keep

on the plank. There are no fronts on the

shops all open after the style of a penny

bazaar. Some thing here are very cheap &

others very dear for instance you can by cigars

at 50 for a 3’ so there is nothing to grumble

at in that respect Bananas 3’ per dog but

such things as jam tinned milk etc are

very dear.
