being to cross the River & get to a certain

point without being seen or captured by

there Scouts or Outposts. We were first of all

marched to the commencing point where

one gang of about 20 men were told off to

cut large logs of wood off the trees. After

this each man had to take 2 of these logs &

besides his rifle had to creep & crawl along

the ground dragging these along with him.

It was great sport we had to creep through

Bogs & burnt grass untill we looked like

a lot of Chimney Sweeps as we were coming

along we came across two of the Defenders

Scouts we of course had to lie as flat as

possible & hide our faces which being white

is easily seen in the darkness, anyhow they

passed us without them us so that was one

danger post.. after this we managed to

reach the River & this is where our logs

of wood came in handy each man had

to place his log in possition & in a very

short time we had made a complete bridge

across the River comprising over 800 logs of
