17 May 1917 - went "over the top"

18 May 1917 - wounded in back and head

19 May 1917 - left by hospital train for Boulogne

24 May 1917 - sailed to England and transferred to a Bristol hospital

1 June 1917 - successful operation to remove shrapnel from near spine

9 July 1917 - arrived home on furlough

19 July 1917 - reported to Farnborough barracks

18 August 1917 - received his personal effects from France

He did not return to active service

Herbert Stanley born 1895 ("Stan")


Wes and Stan also enlisted and saw active service in France (as did Elsie's fiancé Jack). All survived the war although George and Wesley suffered physical and mental wounds respectively.
