German Line was about 600 Yards from our

Line and you could only get near for

Listening Purposes through a system of

Safe Small Trenches dug out toward the

German Line we we used to a Sentry go

and Listen for news such as finding out

whether they were undermining us as we were

undermining their Trenches so before the Loos

Battle opened out we found it was too far

for the men to go over the Top and run 600

Yards to the German Line it would cause too

many casualty only our Barage of Fire to

Protect them so we lad to walk over

the Top one night to within 100 Yards of

the German Line and starts digging another

Trench which was a very Ticklish job any

how we had to start it and Fritz got to

Here us didn't he Let us have it with

Machine guns and Bombs and we had to

Stick this digging until nearly dalight  daylight and

we had a lot more casualty as now we had

our Regt. made up to about 700 again with

Drafts from England as we  were getting ready

for another over the top one consolation we

had a day off next day for doing the Digging

not a day off to go where you like & only in

a Dugout in the Front Line but no guard

duty as when you are in the line you have

2 hours on the  Finestif  looking over No Mans Land

and about 4 hours off night and day while

you are in the front line but second line

was much missing while we were here the

Kitcheners Army had started to come out to

France and we had the 15th Division all
