Germans were shelling the trench to Pieces

he said get out the best way you can what

a terrible thing after all the Slaughter any

way I see a few Fellows make a dash for it

and get Dowled over I thought no I will

Stop here until Nightfall  I walk along

a little way out of the Shell fire as they

but started to drop them where I was and

I found myself with fellow who had got

a Lay off and one with his face Blown

away all the rest dead round them so

I had a go at Dressing this ones leg but

as I lifted it it came away from the body

and he Lay there so quiet he ask me  if

the Stretcher bearer were coming I said yes

they are coming as soon as they can and

every now and again I Fired my Rifle

over the top to make our there were still

a lot of us alive in case they came over

to see and to crown it all the one man

I thought was dead started shouting for

his Mother I said allright old chap

she wont be long and he was going fast

with a Bullet in the Stomach he was

asleep when I first saw him and he ask

for water which I managed to get a Drain

out of my own waterbottle just to moisten his

lips and turned him over comfortable as I

could the chap with the leg off Laid there

and Never said a word and the other

Fellow alike beside myself had his face

Blown away so I had some very Pleasant

company and now not a Man standing

only myself as far as I could see as
