Germans were shelling the trench to Pieces
he said get out the best way you can what
a terrible thing after all the Slaughter any
way I see a few Fellows make a dash for it
and get Dowled over I thought no I will
Stop here until Nightfall I walk along
a little way out of the Shell fire as they
but started to drop them where I was and
I found myself with fellow who had got
a Lay off and one with his face Blown
away all the rest dead round them so
I had a go at Dressing this ones leg but
as I lifted it it came away from the body
and he Lay there so quiet he ask me if
the Stretcher bearer were coming I said yes
they are coming as soon as they can and
every now and again I Fired my Rifle
over the top to make our there were still
a lot of us alive in case they came over
to see and to crown it all the one man
I thought was dead started shouting for
his Mother I said allright old chap
she wont be long and he was going fast
with a Bullet in the Stomach he was
asleep when I first saw him and he ask
for water which I managed to get a Drain
out of my own waterbottle just to moisten his
lips and turned him over comfortable as I
could the chap with the leg off Laid there
and Never said a word and the other
Fellow alike beside myself had his face
Blown away so I had some very Pleasant
company and now not a Man standing
only myself as far as I could see as
