they could as they were shelling the Town

very heavy now their was a Poor old Lady

under the Couch in the Room with her

Rosary saying her Prayers and after  this

I had to mount Guard over the Dead Body

for 2 Hours until I was relieved by another

Fellow and all this time they were still

Shelling the town anyway I got relieved

about 7 o clock in the Evening so I went

and Drowned my sorrows in the nearest

Estaminet and had some Vin Blonk as

they had stopped shelling now we did

not Find out what other Damage the Shells

done but it must have been tremendous

one Lady here took a silver Crusifix

from her Rosary and gave me to wear

as I was the one saved out of 4 of us

and she said as Long as I wore it I

would not get Hurt and I had that

crusifix round my Neck on a Peice of

String untill 1918 and lost it just

After our great retreat back to Albare

and soon after I lost it I got a kick

in the Face with a Mule which sent me

home Wounded for the First Time To change

the subject we had a very nice Funeral

for this Man the Following Morning in

Burvy Cemetry 4 of us who was Left in

the Section Carried him to the cemetry

on a stretcher just the Body wrapped in a

Blanket and a Union Jack over the Top

so he was  the First one I had seen

Buried in a Proper cemetry but it was

a very Terrible Time after expecting to
