Daylight the consequence were they new what
was coming off the same as us I not I felt
very sorry for all those Fellows who were
going over the top wondering how many of
them would come back we placed the Ladders
in Position for them then we went back
a little way in some trenches near La Basse
about 3 Hours before the Fun was to comence
over Job was if they were successfull we were
to Follow on and take La Basse Lille Etc
so about 4 oclock in the Morning Sunday
by the way which was nearly always the
Day for the over the Top Business
better the Day Better the Dead I supose
we opened the Bombardment with about
600 guns wheel to wheel so there was a
Pretty fine noise for about 3 Hours and
the Dug outs we were in seemed to shake
like cradles with the Vibration and it
was almost Imposible to hear one speak
the Germans did not reply to our Fire
but about 8 oclock when our Guns ceased
fire and the Boys went over they did
catch a cold as the amunition was not
good enough to break the German Barbie
Wire the consequences were we could not
get through and we must have Lost
100s who got through and the Germans
were calling out the Regiment by name
as they went over casualty and did
not gain an Inch of ground the artillery
not having enough amunition to do
