with dead Bodys and see the Poor Fellow

Laying out in  Between the lines who

had been killed perhaps months before

as it must have been in the retreat  .from mons..

with some and they look just through

they were having a Sleep in Full

uniform as it was impossible to get out

to bury them and there were a couple

of Dead Cows out there as well and

Didnt they stink terrible they called

this Trench Dead Cow Farm as the

Germans advanced here they must have

been Grazing on the fields and stopped

a Bullitt or two and Every morning

and Evening at Dusk and Dawn

every man had to stand to the

Fire Step ready to charge or advance

or Beat off the German as they used

to make an Habit of attaching either

at Dusk or Dawn the French Duty here

was 2 Hours on the Fire Step and 4 Hours off

and during the off time you could snatch

a wink or two of Sleep but you never

got much Sleep as it was so cold and

your limbs ached so as you were not allowed

to take anything off and it was a Proper

Scramble to get Wood to make your Tea

there were a few old Barns at the Back

of the line and we used to scramble

up here and knock the Beans Down

and Firewood we were able to manage

to get enough to cook our food and

there were Plenty of Vegetables about

here which we could gather when it
