Laying out in Between the lines who
had been killed perhaps months before
as it must have been in the retreat .from mons..
with some and they look just through
they were having a Sleep in Full
uniform as it was impossible to get out
to bury them and there were a couple
of Dead Cows out there as well and
Didnt they stink terrible they called
this Trench Dead Cow Farm as the
Germans advanced here they must have
been Grazing on the fields and stopped
a Bullitt or two and Every morning
and Evening at Dusk and Dawn
every man had to stand to the
Fire Step ready to charge or advance
or Beat off the German as they used
to make an Habit of attaching either
at Dusk or Dawn the French Duty here
was 2 Hours on the Fire Step and 4 Hours off
and during the off time you could snatch
a wink or two of Sleep but you never
got much Sleep as it was so cold and
your limbs ached so as you were not allowed
to take anything off and it was a Proper
Scramble to get Wood to make your Tea
there were a few old Barns at the Back
of the line and we used to scramble
up here and knock the Beans Down
and Firewood we were able to manage
to get enough to cook our food and
there were Plenty of Vegetables about
here which we could gather when it
