Can anyone believe that Germany will offer

peace on terms acceptable to the majority

she has still a huge fighting machine, she

holds huge tracts of allied countries

and although she has completely failed

in her objective her army is still a long way

from the Rhine. Russia may possibly

make a big offensive operation + big

pushes may be made by the French +

English but this will take time. Still

the year is young yet and is big with

possibilities. The unexpected still happens

in war + possibly relying on this we

are optimistic. I have heard much talk

about the end of the war but the

arguments are not convincing as they are

often the same as we heard in the first

few weeks of the war. All my men write

home + say "it will soon be over" even if they

have not seen or heard any news for

weeks. Being out here those people may look

upon them as good judges although they

know less of the front than they would do

were they at home
