My Own Darling Wife
We have had a few busy days
+ so it seems a long while since I
wrote a letter to you. Out of the last
three nights one I spent in a
chalk pit and two in a shelter under
or rather by the side of a bank. We
came across here this morning + I shall
be spending the night out with a
working party. Our rest period
finished very abruptly. We were
warned late one night to be standing
by at 3.45 am at a certain place
on the following morning. We went
but I expected to be back for breakfast.
It was not to be however as we
were ordered farther forward +
spent the day waiting in one of
the hundreds of sunken roads in
which this district abounds. Later
on two companies went into the
