& then I found some stables where I could
put all the men not on duty. They were
somewhat pleased even though they had
been real cheerful all the day. We had a
shelter for the officers & soon after 10am I
tried to go to sleep for an hour or two. It
was so cold in the hut, in spite of a
fire, that at 2am I went out for a walk.
I tried to sleep at 4 am & managed most of
an hour but just before six I made tea
with the quart of water which was all
we had left. Fortunately the day was
fine & I soon felt as fresh as paint.
I had a good day & saw quite a lot of
interesting things. We expected being
relieved from fire last night but
fortunately were not or it would have
mean a night in the open. I didn't
want to go as I had discovered two
fine huts each containing a real good
bed. Hall & I slept on one & got our boots
off for the first time: since leaving the
rest camp. The Bn was to have been
relieved to-day but that is off too
However I have to move as I am now
out of our area so I don't know what
will happen to us to-night. Last night's
rest will carry me over though. We
are due for a rest & if it comes I'll
be jolly glad. I have not had my clothes
off since the night of the 23rd & I have
not had a wash since the morning of
the 25th. Only enough water to drink. The life suits me however
& I am real A1. Expect you know
all about the war but we don't - only
