I'll draw a plan for you
Drawing of living quarters in the shape of a capital letter I. central space is seven by twelve feet, with a stove near the entrance and beds in alcoves on the four corners.
We have a few tons of steel, wood & earth on top
to keep the Boche shells from disturbing us
and in the room we have numerous shelves, a
table, AN EASY CHAIR, 3 dining chairs and a
stool. All the walls are covered with wood, as
is also the ceiling. The stove keeps us warm
and cosy. Our table cloth consists of a sandbag
cut open and it does not require washing.
By day we usually manage with one candle
but when it is dark we burn three at a time.
Sometimes our stove smokes and the dug out
is soon filled. However it soon clears & we
are no worse for the cough we had. I found
my wire netting bed rather hard at first
but now it seems very comfy & I don't
feel the wire on my hip. I sleep like a
top & wake like a giant refreshed. Our
orderlies are doing well in the way of meals
and of course there is little else for them
to see to. It seems an age since I had
my buttons cleaned & my equipment nicely
polished. Still I don't think any of us
look too bad, you wouldn't mind having
us in to tea. Occasionally it is difficult
to get either a wash or a shave & then
of course we are not nearly so pretty. The
mud appears to disappear (when it dries) without
the aid of a brush so I expect there is a
fair amount of dust in the clothes.
