My Own Darling Wife,
The war goes on + the shells
keep wizzing over our heads
bearing messages of love + peace
to the Boche. We continue in our
dug outs in support passing the
day in resting + such amusements
as making returns + reports. The
need grows no less and our
working parties find the same task
for them each night. The trench
which they made so clean the night
before they find filled up again +
so the work goes on. One realises
how much one eats when it has
to be carried a mile or two across
muddy country. The food is
good + only the water vile but
even that we do not notice as
we use most of it in the
form of tea. We drink tea with
every meal + large quantities of
