My Own Darling Wife,
Ta for the second letter
received this morning. It did me a
lot of good. We came back last
night further behind the line. The
relief was late in getting through
+ to make things more pleasant the
rain started to pelt down as hard as
it could. The trenches were impassible
owing to the mud + the track which
winds round the shell holes + across
the mud was in places almost
up to the knees. Part of our way was
on a duck board track and it
seemed absolutely endless. I had
anticipated having a hot meal not
later than 12:30 am but it was hours
after that when I was wandering on
the duck boards feeling tired, really
hungry + properly "fed up." I had
sent my rations out early so that I
