CONFIDENTIAL.

Chief Commandant of Police,

It has been reported that a sailing vessel

"Evangelistra" of Kyrenia, owner Savas Haralambou,

Master Michael Savas, which has sheltered under the

Moullia rocks, near Paphos, was sunk on the 6th

instant by a French cruiser. It appears to have

cleared from Kyrenia on 15th November last for Rhodes

with a cargo of olive seed, and the crew state that

they had come from Rhodes via Castellorizo, and that

the only cargo on board was the vessel was sunk was

40 sacks of soap. There is reason, however, to

believe that arms and ammunition were discovered on

the vessel, and that this was the reason why she was

sunk by the French cruiser. I am directed by the

High Commissioner therefore to request you to take

steps to impound the correspondence of the owner,

Savas Haralambou, and to have it examined with the

owner when he returns to Kyrenia (I understand that

he is at present in Larnaca) as it is necessary that

every step possible should be taken to ascertain

whether there is anything to show that the vessel

was carrying contraband of war. Meanwhile His

Excellency is endeavouring to ascertain from the

French Admiral the precise reasons for the sinking

of the vessel.
