To the
Collector of Customs,
Limassol & Paphos.
Honourable Sir,
Michael Sava of Kyrenia, master of sailing-vessel
"Evangelistria" - British colours - loaded with 40 bags of
soap and bound from Rhodes to Limassol via Castellorizo,
was obliged by bad weahter to anchor at Mullia on Ist
Feburary, 1916. Owing to rough weather she was unable to
move from there; and on Sunday, the 6th instant, at 4.30
p.m. (approximately) a French war-ship, which was coming
oppostie to our port, after searching above-mentioned
vessel, ordered the sailors to enter a boat and, capturing
the master, sank it. I then sent a messenger for the Health
Officer to come and examine the four sailors and he did not
allow them to land but gave orders for them to be placed in
an empty vessel in the harbour, pending telegraphic
instructions from the Chief Medical Officer.
According to statements of the sailors, a boat
came from the war-ship, examined their papers, looked at
the flag, captured the captain and the papers, ordered the
sailors to enter a boat of their own and torpedoed the
vessel. It is understood that this was done for their not
hoisting up the flag. I think that, according to the state-
ments of the sailors, there was no other cargo on board
except the forty bags of soap.
Dated 7th February, 1916 (Signed) Mehmed Murad
Customs Officer.
