  after a week or two the weather will be

  quite warm though at present there is

  quite a "nip in the air." The guns are

  making pretty music & there is evidently

  no lack of ammunition. We have no orders

  to move yet. Some of the others arrived in

  this area today & I believe the others

  will come soon. It is a month since Hall

  came out & he is keeping fit & well. The CO

  is A1. The padre has recovered & in fact we 

  are all well & happy. I wrote a letter to you

  this morning & also one from the rest camp.

  We dine to-night at 7:45 pm and look like

  having a good feed. I have not been hungry 

  yet but those two cakes &c came in very

  useful as did also the tea tablets. My

  French is very bad but many words &

  phrases have come back & I shall soon

  be able to manage easily if we do not

  have too long spells without being

  obliged to talk French. This part of the

  country is very different from the France I

  was in in 1909. (A commotion was just

  caused outside here by the rats catching

  a chicken - nearly as bad as a fox at

  Langwith). To-day we have had a pay

  day and all kinds of inspections. The 

  men have been writing letters & as Johnson

  was censoring he came across this passage

  "we have had two days hard marching & now

  my feet are as tender as your lips" That 

  was to his sweetheart & I expect she will

  be real pleased at the compliment. The CO's
