  The rough weather and the approach of
  

  night made it impossible either to tow the schooner
  

  or to communicate with the shore - it was also
  

  dangerous for the Pothuau to remain stationary -
  

  and the Evangelista was therefore sunk, the captain
  

  taken prisoner and the crew released.
  

  
  

  On examination of the captain it is
  

  proved that his paper were in order. the fact of
  

  their being Turkish was due to their having been
  

  made out before the suzerainty of Turkey was annulled,
  

  and the same applies to the passports of the crew.
  

  
  

  The captain states that he left Kerynia
  

  in November last for Rhodes, where he stopped, owing
  

  to the bad weather, all December, when he was
  

  compelled to leave by the Italian authorities. He
  

  took on board 40 sacks of soap and bought sand for
  

  ballast.
  

  
  

  The French consul at Rhodes confirms all
  

  these statements. The schooner then went to
  

  Castelorizo where it stopped for some time and was
  

  then visited by the French authorities and the
  

  papers visèd. No odour of petrol was observed,
  

  nor anything suspicious.
  

  
  

  The vessel left Castelorizo for Kerynia but
  

  owing to bad weather was obliged to put in to Paphos:
  

  for the same reason the captain anchored at some
  

  distance from the port, to get better shelter.
