stay behind on no account, saying if I missed
the boat she would see me alright to Sydney.
We had a splendid time there dancing and
singing and had a fine supper there and I
had to sing a few songs. I sang one entitled
"The valley lay smiling before me" and when I finished
one man began jumping shaking my hand and I had
to sing it again for him as he said it was about
forty years since he heard it sung before.
The name of the people we were with wasKennedy from Newcastle West, and a lot of
other people from the south of Ireland.
We left there about ten oC and I had to promiseif ever I was in Melbourne, I would call to see
them. We got back to the city about 11 o'C that night
and I had to stay with Mrs Lynch until next day
after dinner when she let me get back to the boat
to see if everything was alright but I had to
promise I would call back in the evening. I called
again that evening and I had tea and of course I
had to stay that night so after breakfast I said
goodbye and Mr Lynch came to the boat with me.
When I got on board again all the fellowswondered where I had been, as they hadn't seen
me for 3 days and didn't know I had and friends
