last night from 10.30 pm to 1 am. - "A" squadron

in the trenches + "B" squadron attacking. I

was in the first "wave" (wire cutters) + we

had some time. We advanced in rushes between

the firing of their star shells, cut through

the wire entanglements + trip wires + got

our squadron through. When we got into their

trenches, however, it developed into a free fight

in the dark. We used fists etc + above all

"puff bombs" They are like roman candles,

+, as the instructions say "give a blinding flash

+ a terrible report." However, I can tell you better 

all these things when I see you, love you - may

it be soon. You are getting on splendidly, my

lass. - take care not to strain yourself won't

you? Thank Julia for her little note, +

tell her if it was only £1 worth of chocolate

instead of books - well..... Well, lassie

o'mine , I've just got time for the 5.5 post, so

cheer up - I'll soon have you in my arms again
