door, the latter looking into a little garden.
The houses are all little villas, with bedrooms
upstairs. Each house has a deep well somewhere
at the back, and we draw water by letting
down a bucket. In peace-time, I fancy
this would be a very nice place to stay
in. The houses, of course, are in the
meantime nearly all deserted, the inhabitants
having fled when the devastation com-
menced. Some houses are levelled to the
ground, some burned to a mere shell,
while others are all bespattered with
bullets and with great holes in the roof
and walls. We are situated on the
outer edge of the town, where the houses
are not so badly damaged.
Our little company (about 200 men) are
billetted in groups round this street and
near at hand. My section of about 60
occupy four or five houses, and we have
another house set apart as a cookhouse
-
door, the latter looking into a little garden.
