but there was a tremendous lot of
sniping and any amount of rifle grenades
flying about so one had to be most awfully
careful. The best part of a rifle grenade
is the fact that you can see it coming
and it often lies on the ground for 5 or 6
seconds before it bursts so as a rule
one has plenty of time to get round the
nearest traverse. At night its rather a
strain on the nerves as one cant see
them but can hear them coming quite
plainly, the only thing to do is to stand
absolutely still and listen for it to fall,
then after you have heard the thud of
its fall - if its anywhere near - down
you get as low as possible waiting for it
to burst. One afternoon one fell right into
our trench but everyone saw it and nobody
was hurt, it blew a hole about 18 in
deep through the foot board! The second
night we were in they sent about
80 rifle grenades at us before we spotted
where they were coming from and then
my rifle grenade men got started
and the third we sent off did the
