where the Old Hun was and apparently
wiped them out - as we were'nt bothered
again that night.
What impressed me more than anything
was the sight of the country round us.
Running right accross our lines away into
the German lines was a road - once a
main road with trees each side and
full of traffic, and now - I can hardly
describe it as one looked along it as
dawn was breaking - every tree as far
as one could see - shot to pieces! Splintered
trunks standing out against the sky line.
Shell holes - broken stone work - torn barbed
wire - equipment old and broken - dead
Germans - rifles - absolute despairing
ruin everywhere so intense that one
could almost touch it and tore ones
feelings to shreds. I am afraid this
sounds like Rosa N. Carey at her worst
but it made a tremendous impression
on me and I shall never forget it.
I wish some great artist or author could
see it and feel it as I did and
