The Liddle Collection of letters, diaries, maps, photographs, artwork,
scrapbooks, official papers, souvenirs, uniforms, newspapers, books
and personal recollections in manuscript, typescript and tape-recorded
form was built up over a period of almost twenty-five years by the
historian Peter Liddle. The archive was acquired for the Library of the
University of Leeds through the help of many private individuals,
charitable trust and commercial organizations who recognized its historical
importance and the scholarly advantages of its acquisition by the
University, with its large and active School of History and the major
research facilities of the Brotherton Library. The Collection has associated
with it a post of Keeper, whose task it is to continue the expansion
and development of the archive, to organize and preserve it, and to
promote and administer its scholarly exploitation and use.
Material documenting the experience of over five thousand men and
women is held within the Collection, which covers not only all the
fighting fronts where British and Commonwealth forces were engaged
but also the Domestic Front, Women's Service and Conscientious
Objection. French and German experience is also documented. All the
British Armed Services are comprehensively represented, and personal
